What to Do if You Lose Your Debit Card

Not being able to find your debit card can cause some serious anxiety. Although you may have just misplaced it, you might have actually left it somewhere like at a restaurant or at the gym in your workout bag, or – worst case scenario – it was stolen from your purse or wallet or swiped from a retail counter while you were distracted.

In most cases, you probably misplaced it. But the good news is there are things you can do to protect yourself in any scenario.

Debit Card Controls

If you have an Atlantic Union Bank personal debit card, the first step when you’re unable to locate it is to disable it. Atlantic Union Bank’s Debit Card Controls allow for some peace of mind with its virtual on/off switch. Log into your online banking account or our mobile app and navigate to Debit Card Controls where you can set the personal card to “off.” If you find it, then it’s just as easy to turn it back on.  Card Controls provides the security of turning your card off with the convenience of not having to order a new one if it is simply misplaced.

Check your account history

Take a look at your purchase history in online banking or the mobile app. You’ll be able to see your recent transactions. If you don’t notice anything suspicious, hopefully it’s a good news scenario and you’ve just misplaced your card. (Remember: Turning off your card with Debit Card Controls will prevent it from being used while you are in the process of looking for it).

Report it missing

If you do think the card was stolen, or the search for it has proven to be unsuccessful, give us a call or visit your local branch to report it missing. We can issue you a new one and you’ll receive it in the mail. If you visit a branch, you can immediately get a temporary debit card for use while your new one is being processed.

Cancel automatic charges

If you’re waiting for a new card, or received a temporary one, you’ll need to make sure any automatic payments that are debited from your old card number are cancelled and a new payment option is set up – expenses like monthly charges you’ve set up for your gym membership or utility payments. There’s a chance your auto debits are ACH transactions, which are tied directly to a routing and bank account number. These transactions will go on as usual. It might be a good idea to check if you aren’t sure. (Also, if your debit card number is being stored in an online purchase path or other subscription service you use regularly, you’ll need to make sure you change it to your new number once you receive a new card).
